Spacers: the perfect solution to cell compression

Spacers: the perfect solution to cell compression

During prolonged use of a module, various events (vibration, scuffing during integration, abrasive adhesives, etc.) can lead to the deterioration of the plastic film insulating the cells. Cells in direct or indirect contact, via their damaged envelopes, cause a short-circuit or even outgassing through the safety valve, making them unusable.

Based on this observation and knowing that the life of a cell increases when it is compressed (by around 40% according to the manufacturers), SIG ENERGY TECHNOLOGY asked itself how to ensure optimal cell compression while preserving the performance of the module. The integration of spacers appeared to be the key to solving this problem. The idea of creating our own spacers was born.

For the past two years, SIG has been offering high quality dividers, designed and manufactured in France from recycled plastics. Our permanent stock provides an immediate response to our customers' needs. The divider is placed between each cell. This separation results in the reduction of heat transmission between the cells and also the reduction of electrical risk.

The use of spacers reduces the development costs for a stationary application, as they make it optional to create a box to integrate the battery. Combining our spacers with metal plates at the ends of the module is ideal for compression and best battery performance.

Our R&D Department places particular emphasis on our customers' interest in these spacers. And while they are suitable for 72 Ah and 105 Ah cells, we are currently studying the creation of spacers for all types of high-capacity cells (over 150 Ah).
